These volunteer positions require a strong interest in indigenous teachings and sustainable living and the ability to interact with indigenous medicine people, donors, and staff. Candidates should be detail-oriented, excellent writers, able to handle very delicate content and material. Some positions may require individuals to sign legal documents protecting the intellectual property of our Spiritual Leader and/or —Forest Medicines Sanctuary. Each Behind the Scenes volunteer should have an interest and personal dedication to FMS’s mission and goals.
Our Behind The Scenes positions are available year round, and require an 6–10 hour per week commitment. Additional hours, including on weekends and evenings, may be necessary for particular positions. In most cases, work can be done from home, with bi-weekly check-in via a video conference call and a monthly video or in-person meeting in Worthington MA.
Our volunteer positions are an excellent opportunity to gain experience in the area you choose to contribute and a chance to better understand the inner workings of a grassroots nonprofit. Most every volunteer will benefit from working directly with our Spiritual Leader, Board Members, staff and other volunteers. And, our team possesses a strong and diverse background in international indigenous event coordination, marketing/communication, nonprofit development/management and spiritual development.

Events & Outreach Assistant
The Events & Outreach Assistant is a volunteer position requiring a high level of responsibility in carrying out our organization’s mission by connecting us with our key audiences through a variety of activities, gatherings and events.
The Events and Outreach Assistant will assist with a wide range of events and administrative tasks serving FMS’s students, donors, community organizers and members.
Administrative tasks include telephone work (communicating with members, registering participants, sharing event information, working with vendors and maintaining contact with Board) as well as spreadsheet input and maintenance on computers. The events require some evening and weekend work and occasional tabling. Additional tasks will be assigned by the Board of Directors.
The candidate for this position should be a high-energy person that possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills including superb telephone manner, solid writing skills, and the ability to interact with a variety of people. It is also important for this volunteer to have the capacity to work on multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast paced environment, and possess excellent follow through skills. Experience working with MailChimp and Aplos a plus. This is an opportunity for professional event planners looking for a pro-bono opportunity, college students interested in nonprofit development/fundraising.
Grant Writing & Fundraising Assistant
The Grant Writer & Fundraising Assistant plays a key role in assisting our organization in attracting the necessary funding to fulfill upon our vision while serving indigenous communities that have requested our support. This position will report to the organization’s Board of Directors with support from the Spiritual Leader, Board President and staff. Opportunities to write grants for the organization independently may become available for interested volunteers who have more extensive grant-writing experience.
The Grant Writer & Fundraising Assistant is responsible for researching various foundations and grants via the internet and producing well-written and accurate content within set guidelines. It is essential that this volunteer can be prompt with turnaround times and manage multiple documents needed for each submission.
This volunteer must be able to work effectively with multiple supervisors, balance and prioritize multiple requests. We’d refer to work with a volunteer that has some grant writing/research experience and/or a degree or study in writing/journalism/English.
Web Maintenance & Email Management
A volunteer is needed to help FMS update and maintain its WordPress web site, assist with online communications and email list management on a weekly basis, with some weeks requiring more hours and others none at all.
The Web Maintenance & Email Management volunteer will be responsible for weekly postings of new events, photographs, promotional blurbs, audio files, and other related work on an ongoing basis. Fluency in Spanish a plus. Additionally, this volunteer will assist us in adding new people to our email lists, deleting bad email addresses and overall email list management.
He/She must have skills and experience in website maintenance and preferably know how to work with Flash. When applying, please provide a list of three to five sites you have maintained and/or designed.
The Membership Coordinator will report to the Membership Director and oversee member recruitment, registration, benefits and communication.
The Membership Coordinator is responsible for sending out monthly emails to members, and coming up with creative, yet appropriate, solutions to successfully recruit new members. Close communication with the volunteer Newsletter Editor and Events & Outreach assistant is necessary to fulfill on the delivery of member benefits and it is expected that this volunteer will return all phone calls and emails promptly.
Candidates with experience working in indigenous circles are preferred. Very good organizational skills and ability to handle multiple relationships and requests is necessary. Experience working with MailChimp and Aplos a plus.
The Newsletter Editor volunteer will play the lead role in creating our monthly online newsletter and quarterly print newsletter.
Coordinate newsletter submissions and photographs from volunteer writers, Spiritual Leaders and Board Members; handle the design & layout of the print newsletter, and ensure that completed newsletters are ready to be sent on time.
Experience editing/designing a non-profit newsletter. Degree in English, Journalism, Marketing preferred. Experience working with MailChimp and Membership in non-profit orgs a plus.
FMS is looking for a volunteer to work on transcribing audio tapes of teachings and public talks and Music offered by our Spiritual Leaders at FMS organized gatherings.
Volunteer transcribers are responsible for listening to media files and transcribing its contents word for word, and ensuring that this intellectual property is protected and media files are well preserved.
Candidates should have excellent command of English, typing speed of at least 70 wpm and be willing to learn new audio and sound technologies. It is also important that volunteers are willing to sign legal documents protecting the intellectual property of our Spiritual Leader and/or Forest Medicines Sanctuary. Very strong personal commitment to protecting and preserving indigenous wisdom, confidentiality of members and the sanctity and confidentiality of the healing environment is necessary.
Grounds Maintenance and Landscaping
FMS is looking for a volunteer to work with the Vision of our Spiritual Leaders at FMS organized gatherings and on a regular ongoing needs. The work is predominately seasonal but Winter snowblowing and shovel to keep paths open is a plus. Winter residence may be needed when the FMS is left for travel to provide to other venues and for trips to work with Elders.
Volunteers are committed to a regular maintenance schedule and soliciting help where needed. This volunteer position requires working well with other volunteers.
Candidates should have excellent command of property management and knowledge of gardening and landscaping skills along with our Spiritual Leader and/or Forest Medicines Sanctuary. A working knowledge of Permaculture and preservation of Native species of Flora and Fauna is a Plus. Very strong personal commitment to protecting and preserving indigenous wisdom on the sanctity of Earth, confidentiality of members and the sanctity of the healing environment is necessary.
FMS is looking for a volunteer to work on event recordings and creative sound healing projects as envisioned by our Spiritual Leaders at FMS.
Volunteer recording technicians are responsible for organizing the recording equipment, listening and editing media files and creating marketable CDs and downloadable media files, and ensuring that this intellectual property is protected and media files are well preserved.
Candidates should have excellent command of English and be willing to learn new audio and sound technologies. It is also important that volunteers are willing to sign legal documents protecting the intellectual property of our Spiritual Leader and/or Forest Medicines Sanctuary. Very strong personal commitment to protecting and preserving the sanctity of the FMS healing environment and creating opportunities to share this healing worldwide through digital musical files.
